    Minecraft Survival Guide

    Minecraft Survival Guide

Minecraft has received huge amounts of praise recently for being one of the most creative games conceived for many years. Each game is randomly built of hundreds of thousands of cubes. There are many different types of cube. Ranging from solid rock, or dirt and even lava blocks.
You can spend all your time building huge castles, or all your time mining for coal. The choice really is yours to do whatever you feel.

I'll cover here the basics of surviving your first night. The first is always the worst.
At night a whole variety of monsters and bad guys spawn and try and end the life of your player. Skeletons fire arrows from what seems like miles away, spiders jump out of nowhere and chase you for miles and zombies hide behind corners waiting to jump on the player when he least expects it.

    Day Time.
During your first Minecraft day you should collect enough raw material to see you through the night. Start with wooden logs to make planks and sticks, then mine some coal and rock for picks and torches.

Crafting a stone sword will help in case any stray monsters penetrate your defences unexpectedly.
Build a small dwelling where you can hide out if you find yourself surrounded by monsters.

    Kung Fu Panda

    Plot
The story is set in the Valley of Peace, a fictional land in ancient China inhabited by anthropomorphic animals. Po (Jack Black), a young, clumsy and overweight panda, is a kung fu fanatic who idolizes the Furious Five – Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Monkey (Jackie Chan), Mantis (Seth Rogen), Viper (Lucy Liu), and Crane (David Cross) – a quintet of kung fu masters trained by the red panda Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) to protect the valley. Because he works in his goose[5] father Ping's (James Hong) noodle restaurant, Po is unable to achieve his dream of becoming a kung fu master himself.

One day, Shifu's mentor, the elderly tortoise Master Oogway (Randall Duk Kim), has a vision that Shifu's former student and foster son, the snow leopard Tai Lung (Ian McShane), will escape from prison and return to the Valley of Peace to take revenge for being denied the Dragon Scroll, which is said to hold the secret to limitless power. Shifu holds a kung fu tournament for the Furious Five so that Oogway may identify the legendary Dragon Warrior, the one kung fu master worthy of receiving the Dragon Scroll and defeating Tai Lung. Po arrives too late before the doors to the tournament close and, desperate to see the Dragon Warrior as Oogway is about to make his decision, straps himself to a set of fireworks and rockets into the sky, crashing into the middle of the arena; to the surprise of everyone present, Oogway chooses Po, seemingly by accident.

Unwilling to believe that a big, fat panda can be the Dragon Warrior, Shifu attempts to get rid of Po by berating and ridiculing him into quitting his training with the Furious Five, who similarly despise and mock Po for his lack of respect and skill in kung fu. After receiving helpful advice from Oogway, however, Po endures his grueling training and slowly begins to endear himself to the Five with his tenacity, culinary skill and good humor. By this time, Tai Lung escapes from prison as foreseen by Oogway, who passes away after making Shifu promise he will train Po. Still unable to grasp the basics of kung fu, Po despairs he has no chance of defeating Tai Lung until Shifu discovers that Po is capable of impressive physical feats when motivated by food and, using the promise of a meal, successfully trains Po to incorporate these skills into a makeshift yet effective kung fu style.

Meanwhile, the Furious Five set out on their own to stop Tai Lung themselves, only to return following their defeat. Shifu decides Po is ready to receive the Dragon Scroll which, upon being opened, reveals nothing but a blank, reflective surface. Thinking the scroll is useless, Shifu orders Po and the Five to evacuate the valley while he fights Tai Lung to delay him as long as possible. The dejected Po meets with his father Ping who, in an attempt to console him, reveals that the long-withheld secret ingredient to his famous "secret ingredient soup" is nothing, saying that things become special if people believe them to be. Realizing this is the point of the Dragon Scroll, Po goes to confront Tai Lung after he nearly kills Shifu. Po proves to be a formidable challenge for Tai Lung as he tries to protect the Dragon Scroll to lure the villain away from Shifu, but it eventually falls into Tai Lung's grasp. However, he is unable to understand or accept its symbolic meaning, and Po ultimately defeats him using the secret "Wuxi Finger Hold". Po is praised by the Valley of Peace and earns the respect of the Furious Five, who fully acknowledge him as a true kung fu master. Shifu, exhausted but alive after his fight with Tai Lung, is finally at peace with himself now that peace has returned to the valley.

    Transformers: DOTM The Game Demo

Gamespot has posted a video demo (below) of Transformers: Dark of the Moon The Video Game that includes commentary and interview with Sean Miller, High Moon Studios' Director of the game. The game graphically and play style is identical to War for Cybertron (no surprise, uses the same engine) but does not have Autobot and Decepticon campaign paths. The video shows a little of the Bumblebee and Ironhide levels and some of their character specific special actions. The game is coming out on all major consoles except PC on June 14th. 7 Things Minecraft Taught Me About Internet Marketing!!

Well, Its a new month. and as with last month ill be starting off with a Minecraft post ^^

Minecraft is the phenomenal indie Java game that's swept the Internet, and, given the sea of copycats springing up out there, might yet prove to revolutionize the game industry. Here, I'm going to use seven game lessons as metaphors for Internet Marketing:

    1. Build you first night's shelter *fast*!
In Minecraft, you start with the environment around you and two empty hands. In about ten minutes, "nighttime" in the game will fall and monsters come out to kill you. You have to be fast to succeed the first night. Similarly, in web businesses you want to be self-sustaining as soon as possible. The longer your web business isn't paying for itself, the more it's going to feel like you're taking a beating instead of getting ahead.

    2. Be willing to explore.
You're unlikely to have everything you need right in front of you. Maybe you spawned near trees and some sand and dirt; but you're still going to have to find lava, clay, animals, and resources if you want the full game experience. In Internet Marketing, no matter how much you know, there's more you don't know. There's web business models out there waiting to be discovered. Just when you think you've seen everything, along comes some wise guy who has a new way of doing business you never thought of before.

    3. The competition isn't tough, just numerous.
In Minecraft, you have enemies which include spiders, zombies, skeletons, and "creepers" which you'll discover are the most bothersome. There's a lot of them and you always have to keep an eye out for them, but the good news is that none of them have very sophisticated AI. They see you, they charge, you kill them, they die. Likewise in web marketing, it may seem like everybody else has a secret formula for getting in the first page of search results or converting more customers. In fact, everybody's using the same tools you are - it's just tough to make it because there's a lot of hands competing for each dollar.

    4. Dig deep!
In Minecraft, diamonds, gold, coal, lapus lazuli, and iron are all waiting for you to dig them up and convert them into handy resources and tools. and so with Internet Marketing, there's a lot of money out there that's spread very thin. Take a miner's view of it. Grind for 100 yards and make ten dollars in ad impressions. Well, keep grinding!

    God of War 3

    Gameplay

God of War III features gameplay similar to previous installments. The player controls the character Kratos in a combination of first-person/third-person combat (including quick-time), platforming and puzzle game elements. Kratos' main weapons are the Blades of Exile (initially the Blades of Athena), with other new weapons including the Claws of Hades, the Nemean Cestus and the Nemesis Whip. The Nemean Cestus (a pair of fist gauntlets) and Item the Bow of Apollo are crucial as they are required to advance through certain stages of the game.

Unlike the previous games in the series, the primary weapons also dictate the use of magic, with each weapon having an individual magic ability: Divine Reckoning (Blades of Athena), Army of Sparta (Blades of Exile), Soul Summon (Claws of Hades), Nemean Roar (Nemean Cestus) and Nemesis Rage (Nemesis Whip). The power of each magic ability increases via upgrading the weapon to which each is linked (excluding the temporary Divine Reckoning).

Kratos also has an array of secondary weapons referred to as Items that have limited usage before needing recharging (which occurs automatically), being the Bow of Apollo, Head of Helios and Boots of Hermes.

The relics Poseidon's Trident, the Golden Fleece, and Icarus Wings that were acquired in previous games are automatically retained. The Blade of Olympus is also retained but is no longer a primary weapon, being now utilized in conjunction with the special magic feature, "The Rage of Sparta." The Rage of Sparta is the equivalent to the Rage of the Gods and Rage of the Titans from God of War and God of War II, respectively, and provides temporary invulnerability and increased attack damage. The Blade of Olympus is also used in several cut scenes to provide the finishing move on several foes and is used as the magic ability for the Blades of Athena.

Kratos also acquires another "passive" item similar to Poseidon's Trident: Hades' Soul, which allows Kratos to swim in the River Styx without being attacked by lost souls.

Health and Magic upgrades—Gorgon Eyes and Phoenix Feathers respectively—reappear, although in this instance, only three (as opposed to the original six) items need to be found for an upgrade. Minotaur Horns have also been added as a possible find and upgrade the charge for Items. All three upgrades are found in a style of chest that differs from normal Health and magic-giving chests, unlike the previous games.

Almost all upgraded weapons and magic acquired in previous games are gone at the beginning of gameplay, with Kratos only retaining the fully upgraded Blades of Athena, the Golden Fleece, Icarus Wings, and the Blade of Olympus. The Blades of Athena and Blade of Olympus are lost after the first main battle. The Blades of Athena, however, are replaced by the Blades of Exile and the Blade of Olympus is eventually recovered.

Many of the familiar combination attacks reappear, with the new additions including the combat grapple; a ranged "grab" manoeuvre that depending on the weapon can either pull Kratos towards foes or forces them away (necessary at certain points in the game, with Kratos effectively "riding" harpies across chasms), and a simple grab with bare hands that allows Kratos to use lesser foes as a battering ram. Kratos can also rapidly switch between weapons (eventually all four primary weapons) in battle and continue the same attack combination.

The sex mini-game included in previous installments returns (an encounter with goddess Aphrodite while her two servants watch), although on this occasion, it links into the story. The game also features 36 Trophies, which are awarded for Kratos' achievements (e.g. "Releasing the Floodgates" for killing Poseidon). Upon obtaining the platinum trophy, players are linked to the website, spartansstandtall.com. On May 4, 2010, it was revealed that the site was a teaser for the upcoming and second PSP title in the franchise, God of War: Ghost of Sparta.

Game director Stig Asmussen claimed that the hardware capabilities of the PlayStation 3 allow more flexibility in creating the characters of God of War III and allow for further interaction with the environment. Christer Ericson of SCE Santa Monica Studio announced on his Twitter page that God of War III has seamless loading (no Loading screens and No HDD installation requirement).

Other changes include an increase in the number of enemies onscreen, increasing from 15 to a maximum of 50. During several major battles the camera also pans out away from the fight sequence, although the player can still control Kratos while the camera is panning to add a new level of gameplay.

As with previous game installments, a challenge mode is included (seven trials called the "Challenge of Olympus"). A bonus challenge mode is included in both the Ultimate and Ultimate Trilogy Editions of the game called the "Challenge of Exile", with an extra seven challenges. A new mode called the "Combat Arena" is also included in all versions, with the player able to create their own battles and set the level of difficulty. Stig Asmussen stated more challenges may be added as downloadable content to maintain the series.

    Minimalism And Magic

Kirk Hamilton and I have been writing all those FFVII Letters at Paste, banging on about how special and imaginative the game is. Yet as Kirk pointed out in our last letter, it contains a Meteor called "Meteor," a Weapon called WEAPON, and stuff called Black Materia and Huge Materia (to differentiate itself from regular old Materia, of course). Creative.

But in today's new edition in the series, I talk about how the simplistic names are abstraction at its happy work yet again -- when we don't have to think much about what things are called, it gives us more mental resources to think about what they are. Simple names make important concepts intuitive, second-nature. And then when something is named rather prettily, like the sunken Gelnika or Turks leader Tseng, it makes more of an impact on us.

When I was a kid, every game I played was painfully basic in presentation and interface. The only explanation I have for why I so loved these ancient computer games I wrote about in Thought Catalog today was that I was young, had an overactive imagination and had little else I wanted to do with my playtime -- not to mention it's not like we had many more sophisticated adventures in the 1980s, right?

I also think they impacted me so much because they were SO terse, so crude. That blob on the wall is a cabinet I'm supposed to open? How the eff would I have known that without stabbing in the dark? Why does the game tell me I'm holding a map if it is of no use to read it? I must type ENTER HOUSE and not OPEN DOOR or else the game will tell me that area is not available, and if I go WEST at this intersection I'll be instantly killed? Cool.

That cursor blinking at me, demanding my next move, frustration a constant pall -- and yet the continual possibility of sudden, lucky solution teased at the fringe of my awareness just as much as did the threat of sudden, accidental death. I'd hold my breath and get chills; they remain among my favorite gaming memories.

When young there was nothing I loved more than rich universes. I'd write about my favorite games, draw pictures and play pretend. That's why so much of my writing lately has hinged on parsing exactly what's changed -- either about games or about me -- that makes me so inattentive and easily bored.

When I play games that give me lorebooks, diary entries, character stories hidden off the beaten path, I'm surprised at how little I care. It's not so simple as impatience for reading -- I like reading, and I don't even mind when reading in text adventures or visual novels comes at the expense of interactivity. "I've changed," I shrug to myself when I have a million New Unread Notes blinking at me in this or that UI and I just scroll through them quickly because the star or dot or highlight or exclamation point that tells me I haven't read them yet bugs me like it does in Gmail.

Yet as we observe in the FFVII Letters, some types of games can make me go way, way out of my way and to much inconvenience for even the possibility of discovering a new piece of information. Why will I do it for characters and plot threads that are so minimal, when I won't do it for things rendered in much more depth?

Because I like minimalism, I guess. I like to do the brain-work myself, the imagining myself. And I get such a thrill from looking at the title screens of these old adventure games I can now revisit thanks to the magic of this web-based IIe emulator that I don't even try to play them that often, because it still feels good to think of them as ghosts I never conquered, awesome machines that have forever outsmarted me. It still feels good to preserve them as half-remembered, near-legendary things.

And also because I still can't beat most of them without a walkthrough, and you know once you open a walkthrough for one puzzle your tolerance for future ones steadily decreases, and before you know it, you're just going through the motions, and that's no way to honor my past. I get addicted to hints (you should have seen our phone bill, and my parents' consternation, back when Sierra still operated that buck-a-minute hint line).

Anyway, you might have missed this 2009 Classic Moment In SVGL History when I wrote this "open letter" to Bob Blauschild, the designer of two out of five of my best-remembered -- and most frustrating -- adventure games, whose name sketched on the title screens always stuck with me. I did it mostly as humor, never expecting that he'd ever see it, but he did, and here's what he wrote back to me.

Hearing from Mr. Blauschild was frankly a little dazzling, because I still maintain that lifeline to the way I felt about those old computer games and the invisible, sadistic entities that made them. Once in a while if I think about it, so is the fact that I now have periodic occasion to be in the same room as "Lord British", whom as a kid I presumed had to be some real-life mysterious English lord, sitting on a throne made of mainframes, silently challenging the world's peons to encounter him at Ultima. When I was tiny I thought he maybe wasn't even real, some artificial consciousness assembled in green pixels.

I think that's part of the Minecraft juggernaut today, actually. There's the idea of a single figure who goes by the moniker of 'Notch', creating the weather in a savage and lawless, endless world that challenges its players to eke out defiance -- and beauty -- one hard-won step, one precious discovery at a time. Awe and death are both certain in Minecraft, and you just never know which is coming next.
